Klein Oak vs. Tomball
JV Gold
October 9, 2008
JV
Gold Rolls, Wilson Rumbles Over Tomball, 35 – 21
By Don Porter
The score was
never close as the JV Gold team rolled with a convincing team effort at the
Tomball Cougar stadium. The highlight was The Rumble by 310 lb Matt Wilson
scoring on an interception.
Peter Crews,
Matt Garland, Bryce Vaughn, Anton Salter, James Wheeler
and Keith Williams kicked off to the red-clad Tomball Cougars with
Marcel Guillory making the opening shoe-string tackle. The defense bent a
little with Travis Arthur and the linebacker corps of Ryan Emerson,
Sean McGowan and Trevor Dickerson with the tackles. Samuel
Porter had the first TFL (tackle for loss) pushing the Cougars back 7
yards. Brycen Turner broke up the 3rd and long pass to force
the punt. Oak took over deep in its own territory and the O-line of James
Fuentez, Eric Sanchez, Dakota Thompson, Tanner Grebe and Kyle Phillips
shoved the Cougars back on a steady drive down the field. Nicholas Bradley
caught the first of many passes for a 23 yard gain. QB Alex Sisson
worked the option along with Captain Jason Williams for some great
yardage. An 18 yard reverse play carried by Khaleeq Little aided by an
outstanding block by Bradley got the ball into the red zone. A Sisson
dash here and a Williams sprint there put the ball into the end zone with
11 seconds left in the quarter, Bradley PAT good, 7 – 0. An 84 yard, 12
play drive always brings a smile to the Coach’s face.
Tomball began
the second quarter by going nowhere due to the defensive efforts of Dillon
May and Brandon Vong. The Cougar punt put the ball back in the hands
of Oak and another long drive ensued. A steady diet of Sisson and
Williams runs with passes to Khaleeq moved the ball into Cougar
territory before the offense sputtered to turn over the ball on downs. The
well-rested defense led by Captain Darius Butler with the TFL forced
another “3 and out”. The offense put the passing game on display with routes by
Bradley and a TD pass to Dustin Scott to go up 14 – 0 on the
Bradley PAT, 1:10 left. Tomball took to the air and managed the long bomb
to make the score 14 – 7 at half.
Oak received
the second half kick-off and wasted no time with a Sisson 57 yard run
aided by a Jason Williams block that took out two defenders. Jason
was rewarded for his blocking by carrying the ball the last two yards for
the score, Oak 21 to Tomball 7. Tomball tried some trick plays but the defense
could not be fooled and another Tomball punt gave the ball to Oak near
mid-field. Travis Arthur made a great run after the catch before the
Sisson 25 yard TD pass to Dustin Scott for the 28 – 7 lead.
Marcus Green, Johathan Mair and Erin Burgh joined the defense
to end the third quarter.
And then it
was THE RUMBLE. Tomball tried a screen pass. Trevor Dickerson tipped
the ball into the air, it landed in the big breadbasket of 310 lb Matt Wilson
playing nose tackle on the defensive line. Fortunately, Matt had a lot
of forward momentum built up and most of the Oak defense running by his side.
The Oak fans went wild with anticipation that the big fella could make it the 40
yards to the end zone. Not a red shirt was standing after Matt’s escorts
wiped out the would-be tacklers. It was then up to the conditioning drills as
Matt went into high gear, the fans went into screaming fits and the field
and bleachers were stressed by the weight of the event. Several seconds later,
Matt found the end zone. Oak 35, Tomball 7. Tomball went to the passing
game and managed to salvage some pride with a couple of scores but Oak held on
and The Rumble lives on with the 35 – 21 triumph. |
