Tough Loss for JV Gold

 By Don Porter

The JV Gold lost a hard fought game to the Klein Forest Golden Eagles, 0 – 12.

Captains Travis Arthur and Drew Latham received the short kick-off from the green clad Eagles.  With excellent field position, the Panthers pounded the ball up the middle with Darius Butler running behind a stellar O-line of Tanner Grebe, Jeffrey Dalton, James Fuentez, Eric Sanchez and Kyle Phillips.  On a 4th and two, QB Alex Sisson jammed the ball up the middle for the first down.  The offense then went into a nice rhythm, of option plays to Jason Williams and middle passes to Nicholas Bradley and Dustin Scott.  Defying the conventional belief that lack of practice and electricity after Hurricane Ike would hurt the timing, a beautiful 16 play drive unfolded before our sun-filled eyes.  Pounding their way down to the Eagle 12 yard line, the drive stalled on a 4th and two pass attempt that didn’t quite work.  Taking over on downs, the Eagles began their own drive behind a large O-line, big fullback and very quick QB.  Tackles by Will Hoffmans, Dillon May, Brycen Turner, Ryan Emerson, Sam Porter and Chase Kaiser just weren’t enough to stall the Forest drive as the quarter ended with no score.

Klein Forest opened the second quarter with the score on the long drive but missed the PAT to go up, 0 – 6.  The kick-off went awry and the Eagles recovered the bouncing elliptical orb in the middle of the field.  No matter, Dillon May snagged the interception and the Panthers were back in business.  Jason Williams promptly took the ball 60 yards the other way.  The option plays stalled and the Eagles took over on downs.  Brandon Vong dropped the Eagles QB for a huge loss and Darius Butler knocked down the fourth down pass attempt to get the ball back for the Panthers.  Oak went to the passing game but the guys in stripes didn’t like the line play and called holding to negate some of the progress.  A great punt by Nicholas Bradley bounced off the return man and Keith Williams recovered the muff for the Panthers.  An option fumble gave the ball back to the Eagles but the Defense bowed up and refused the Eagles any progress to end the half.

Oak kicked off the second half, Ethan Burgh on the special teams hustle play.  The defense yielded slightly before Trevor Dickerson had the TFL (tackle for loss).  Sam Porter caused a fumble but the ball bounced to the green jersey.  Finally, Ryan Emerson did find a fumble to stop the Eagle drive.  It was not to be long when the offense went three and out and the Eagles took the punt return all the way to the Oak  ten yard line.  Forest scored shortly thereafter to go up 0 – 12, to end the quarter.

The fourth quarter kick-off return was fielded by the shortstop, Ethan Burgh for good field position.  The offense stalled on the three and out.  Skyler Denny came off injured reserve and stuffed the Eagles at the line more than once and Trevor Dickerson joined with another TFL.  The teams exchanged the ball a few times in the middle of the field with no one gaining advantage.  Both teams played hard and Oak had plenty of opportunities, the Eagles were just able to push the ball past the goal line while the Panthers had many, many yards but no scoreboard lights to show for the effort.
