JV
Gold Holds That Tiger, 35 – 24
By Don Porter
It was all
giggles and grins as the JV Gold notched a victory over the neighborhood Collins
Tigers. The scoring was fast and furious for
the Gold in the first half and the
second half was spent playing the full roster to gain valuable experience for
each and every Panther.
Captains
Ryan Emerson and Dustin Scott chose wisely in taking the opening
kick-off and then convinced the kick-off team to open the zipper to let Jason
Williams zoom to the score. Bryce Vaughan, Trevor Dickerson, Ethan
Burgh, Jordan Bush, Jeffrey Dalton, Jonathan Mair were the blocking heroes
for the quick score, Nicholas Bradley hit the PAT on the Dillon May
snap, Oak 7, visitors 0. Brycen Turner was pleased and with the happy
step, fell on the errant option toss to get the ball for the offense and the
short field. QB Alex Sisson ran a nifty option behind the blocking of
Dakota Thompson, Plinio Reyes, James Fuentez, Tanner Grebe and Kyle Phillips
for the 26 yard gain. Alex then hit Nicholas Bradley on a 21 yard
pass before Darius Butler carried the ball in for second score in less
than two minutes, Oak 13, Collins 0. The defense went to work, Skyler Denny,
Samuel Porter, Brandon Vong and Captain Emerson stuffing the third
and one to force the punt. Lots of option plays and a few passes to Travis
Arthur moved the ball smartly down the field. Matt Wilson moved the
line with his blocking. Collins finally showed some resolve and stopped the
Panthers on downs. The defense was a little slow to react after the long time
on the bench drinking water and the Tigers managed a score just before the
quarter ended, Oak 13, Collins 8. The kick-off return team was on its toes and
escorted the speedy Jason Williams to his second return TD of the
quarter, Oak 21, Collins 8 to finish the high scoring frame.
Brycen Turner
fell on his second fumble recovery to open the second quarter. Travis Arthur
displayed his great catching ability and concentration with a series of long
gains and QB Alex ran the ball into the end zone for the 28 to 8 lead.
Nicholas Bradley, enjoying the northerly breeze, kicked the ball out of
the end zone. Dillon May wasted no time by intercepting the ball and
Khaleeq Little wasted no time getting the score, Oak 35, Collins 8.
Keith Williams, a consistent special teams star, made the kick-off tackle.
Erin Burgh joined with Keith and Matt Wilson to force the
short punt. Marcus Green threw a crunching block to free up Alex
on a long run with a downfield block added by Chase Kaiser. Alas, the
ball went over on downs. Sean McGowan pressured the QB into the long
missed passes to end the half.
The third
quarter was a series of punt exchanges as the cool air also cooled off the
offenses for both teams. Ethan Burgh and Jairo Razo made some
great defensive plays with some help from James Wheeler. Matt Garland
added the tackle for loss. Nicholas Bradley showed some athleticism by
handling a bad snap and converting it into a 40 yard punt. The quarter
progressed with no scoring.
The fourth
quarter was about plenty of players playing lots of positions. James Wheeler
made the interception grab and Dominick Forte shined more than once
during the quarter. Collins managed a few scores but their time to shine had
passed. The JV Gold watched the sun go down on the Tigers with a final score of
35 – 24.
