defense earned the shut-out, the offense ran a great game plan but the Special
Teams was the winning difference over Klein High.
At midfield,
the refs told Captains Khaleeq Little and Brycen Turner that Oak
would receive the kick and return man Darius Butler carried most of the
Bearkat kick-off team to that same spot to begin the game. The offense
sputtered in its start so Dillon May snapped the ball back to Nicholas
Bradley who kicked a 43 yard punt to put the Bearkats deep in their own
territory. The Klein High offense went into smooth gear on a 12 play drive
working their way to the Oak redzone. Will Hoffmans teamed up with
Captain Turner to stop the first down, Dakota Thompson stuffed
the short yardage play and Trevor Dickerson made the huge tackle for loss
(TFL) to force the field goal attempt. A mighty rush up the middle created
confusion on the Bearkat side and the holder attempted to pass his way out of
the jam, throwing the ball up for grabs, Sean McGowan making the
interception.
The second
quarter opened with Travis Arthur making the downfield block to open the
way for Jason Williams on a 34 yard run. The offense was overwhelmed by
this success and turned the ball over on downs. Klein ran off another long
drive, helped by a few penalties. Drew Latham came through with the TFL
followed by the Johathan Mair / Trevor Dickerson TFL and the Bearkats
lined up the punt team on the Oak 30 yard line. The fake was on but Samuel
Porter busted through the line at the speed of the snap forcing the Klein
pass to nowhere, the fourth great Special Teams play of the game. Oak found its
passing game with 20 yard gains to Travis Arthur and Dustin Scott.
QB Alex Sisson and Jason Williams added some good runs behind the
O-line of Kyle Phillips, Tanner Grebe, Matt Wilson, Eric
Sanchez and James Fuentez. Time ran out and the game was scoreless
at half.
The third
quarter opened with a mysterious turnover. Oak kicked off, the Bearkat return
man bounced off several tacklers before Erin Burgh went Maytag, spinning
and rinsing the ball away, fumble recovery hero unknown to all in the stands.
With the short field opportunity, Jason Williams followed Dustin
Scott’s block to put the ball on the 5-yard line. Captain Little
took the direct snap to the 3-yard line before Alex hit Nicholas
Bradley on the tight end slant in the endzone. Bradley PAT good, Oak
up 7 – 0. Klein took the kick-off and managed a few downs before Brandon
Vong and Dillon May forced the first of punt exchanges with the
Bearkats. The second punt exchange was caused by Bryce Vaughan and
Anton Saltar with the TFL’s. It was the Special Teams time to shine again
when Jason Williams took the punt on a nice 40 yard return to end the
quarter.
The Oak
offense gained some momentum with blocks by James Fuentez and Jeffrey
Dalton opening holes for Darius and Jason. The Panthers
worked the ball down to the Bearkat redzone and went for the field goal, long
enough but wide right. Will Hoffmans and Trevor Dickerson forced
the “3 and out” and the Klein punter shanked the kick. Oak took over on the
short field only to fumble the ball. Klein felt relief until Kipp Swannie,
Zaim Mohd-Zamri and Kaison Jinkins worked with James Wheeler
to shut the Bearkats down for the punt. Oak broke out the single-wing offense
and ran a lot of time off the clock with Khaleeq and Alex rumbling
up the middle. Ethan Burgh provided a great block and Khaleeq
bounced to the outside for a 40 yard run to get the TD, PAT good, Oak 14 – 0.
With only a minute left, the Klein Bearkats tried the passing game only to see
Peter Crews get the slobber-knocker award with his hit on the receiver.
The final play of the game was very exciting when the Hail Mary pass was picked
off by Marcel Guillory who bobbed and weaved his way to the end zone for
the score, Oak wins 20 – 0.
