Gold Wins Game, District
By Don Porter
The JV Gold
played the rare home game and celebrated by winning the 2008 district title with
a 30 - 14 victory over the Dekaney Wildcats. The 8 – 1 JV Gold played
consistent team football all year long with an O-line that plows ahead, a D-line
that never yields, Special Teams that really are special, and guys in the
backfields and on the ends who never quit blocking, tackling or running with
the ball. The Gold guys gave great games and got great gains.
Aaron
Mitchell
and Jairo Razo were the Captains for the final game of the season against
the Dekaney Wildcats, the new high school in Spring ISD. Oak received the
kick-off, ran the zipper blocking up the middle and Jason Williams took
the ball deep into Wildcat territory. Travis Arthur stepped in for the
injured Alex Sisson at QB and promptly led the team the remaining 30
yards for the TD; Tanner Grebe, Dakota Thompson, Eric Sanchez, Kyle Phillips
and James Fuentez getting dirt on their uniforms so that Jason’s
stayed clean. Oak 6, Dekaney 0. Jonathan Mair hustled on the kick-off
to stop the Wildcats. Sam Porter pressured the passer for the
incompletion and Ryan Emerson and Brycen Turner stuffed the runs
to force the punt. The Wildcat kicker will hope that the game film does not
find Youtube when his kick traveled straight up and straight down, landing next
to him, ouch. The Panthers returned the favor by turning the ball back over
much to the relief of the Wildcat punter. Skylar Denny and Captain
Razo forced the Wildcats into a 4th down, they dare not punt, and
the Panthers got the ball back. The offense sniffed and coughed and Nicholas
Bradley saved the day with an awesome punt to the Wildcat 10 yard line. The
Wildcats, who only had one loss in district play, showed their explosiveness by
completing a 55 yard pass play to end the quarter.
The second
quarter started with the Dekaney QB scrambling his way around the field for the
score, 6 -6. On the attempt for the 2 point PAT, the pass was deflected into
the air; Dillon May caught the ball and took off for the other end of the
field. Showing some great strength breaking tackles and speed outrunning
Wildcats, he took the ball 100 yards for the 2 point credit for Oak, 8 – 6. The
offense sputtered and Nicholas punted another boomer. The defense
exerted itself with Sam Porter on the tackle for loss (TFL) and Sean
McGowan on the pass defense. Not trusting their punter, the Wildcats went
for the 4th down play and Dillon May got his second
interception of the quarter. Nicholas Bradley performed his usual great
catch on a great pass from Travis over the middle to get the ball moving
for the Panthers and Darius Butler hurdled his way to the 5 yard line
behind the absolute smear of a block by Eric Sanchez. Jason
carried the ball into the end zone for the 14 – 6 lead. Ethan Burgh
hustled downfield for the kickoff tackle to pin the Wildcats deep. Brandon
Vong had a few tackles including a TFL when Sam Porter had the 4th
down TFL to end the half. Oak 12, Dekaney 6.
Dekaney got
the ball and the momentum with a nice drive to tie the score, 14 – 14. Oak
responded with a drive of its own on a 40 yard run by QB Travis and great
pass to Dustin Scott. Unfortunately, a fumble recovered by Dekaney left
Oak a few yards short of the goal line. The Wildcats passing game was shut down
by pass defense from the versatile Nicholas Bradley at safety and the
ferocious TFLs of Brandon Vong and Brycen Turner. The Wildcats
had to try the punt and this time the ball went forward 10 yards, a 25 yard
improvement. The short field was good to have and Ethan Burg threw the
block to push Khaleeq Little, playing with a leg injury, into the
end zone, 20 – 14, to end the quarter.
Skylar Denny
notched a TFL to start the Oak defense in the 4th quarter before
Drew Latham had the “slobber knocker” hit of the game. Nicholas Bradley
partially blocked the punt and Oak was back in business. Too excited, the
Panther offense earned a bunch of penalties and turned the ball over on downs.
Brandon Vong was very upset at his water break being interrupted and
promptly made two backfield stops to force the Wildcat punt. Great return by
Jason on blocks by Cody Steele. It didn’t take Darius Butler
long to find the end zone and Oak was up, 28 – 14. A Nicholas kick off
pushed the Wildcats against their own goal line and Drew Latham blasted
through to get the tackle for the safety, 30 – 14. Dekaney went to the passing
game to try to catch up but James Wheeler stopped that with an
interception to end the game.
GOOD JOB FELLAS, 2008 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!
