Klein Oak vs. Cy Ranch
JV Gold
August 28, 2008
JV Gold Defeats Cy Ranch, 27 – 6
By Don Porter
Everything was new at Cypress Ranch, the season and the venue. All 40 players
who stepped off bus played and played well as the JV Gold notched the win.
QB Alex Sisson and Skylar “Ironman” Denny were the captains of the
game against the navy blue clad Mustangs on the
brand new field of the brand new
school. Oak received the kick-off with a fantastic return only to cough up the
ball on the final lunge
for yardage to give the Mustangs the ball at mid-field. No matter, the D-line
of Samuel Porter, Ironman and Brandon Vong promptly stuffed
the runners forcing the punt, a nervous shank of 8 yards. Oak took over,
fumbled again but recovered and finally settled down into a ground pounding game
behind the stout O-line of Ironman, Eric Sanchez, James Fuentez,
Kyle Phillips and Tanner Grieve. Jason Williams and QB
Sisson made some nice runs before some penalties set the Panthers back
enough to turn the ball over on downs. The D-line with help from Brycen
Turner and Trevor Dickerson forced another “3 and out” on the
Mustangs. Oak ended the quarter with a couple of quick passes and runs, the
brand new score board still showing goose eggs.
The offense found its form with a nice running game complimented by a nice pass
over the middle to Nick Bradley before Sisson followed
Ironman’s blocks into the end zone for the first score of the game and
season, Oak 6, Mustangs 0, 8:02. The kickoff squad with Khaleeq Little
and Matt Garland leading the sprint stuffed the Mustangs. Ethan Burgh
grew tired of watching the D-line get all of the tackles so he flew up from his
D-back
position
to kill a sweep. Will Hoffmans knocked down a Mustang pass attempt and
Trevor Dickerson recovered the fumble on the following play to give Oak
the short field. Cody Steele and Nick Bradley made a reception or
two and Oak went down the field for another TD with Sisson making the
final run from 15 yards out to go up 12 – 0, 4:37. Aaron Burgh hustled
down the field for the kick-off tackle followed by great run-stuff by Dakota
Thompson and Dillon May. The Mustangs managed their first first down
of the game/season/school history before Ryan Emerson and Dakota
took offense so played better defense and forced a punt.
Oak
tried the half-ending long pass with a great catch but alas, the pushoff seen by
everyone including the Google satellite, called the play back to end the half,
Oak 12, Cypress Ranch 0.
New schools with no varsity send their new bands out to learn the new tunes so
half-time at the JV game enveloped the newness with much fan appreciation.
All JV games have a 5-minute sequence that will never appear at the Varsity
level or on John Madden, you can’t possibly dream up those plays. Such course
of events opened the 3rd quarter. The Mustang kick-off return man
muffed the kickoff so Oak stuffed him on the 10 yard line. The defense pushed
back to near the goal line forcing a punt only to incur the wrath of several
penalties including illegal contact for hitting the long-snapper so the Mustangs
purchased a first down only to fumble away the ball to Oak. Our mighty Oak
runner was carrying several Mustangs when a blue-clad player stripped the ball
for a 95 yard run to the other end zone. The PAT attempt was blocked and
Trevor Dickerson ran 95 yards the other way for the 2 point takeaway, Oak
14, Cypress Ranch 6; 7:00. Entertaining but the coaches were quite relieved to
see that sequence end. Darius Butler ran ruggedly behind some great down
field blocks by Travis Arthur before Jason Williams carried the
ball into the endzone, Oak 21, Cypress Ranch 6; 4:48. Jonathan Mair,
Eric Sanchez, Drew Latham and Kaison Jinkins jumped the Mustangs with
great tackles to force another 3 and out. Oak got the ball and ran an option of
beauty carrying QB Alex into the end zone for the final score of the day,
27 – 6.
The
fourth quarter was about the Panthers showing the Mustangs how rugged football
is played. The Oak runners all had serious YAC statistics (yards after contact)
and the down field blocking was vigorous. More rugged play by Anton Salter
and Jairo Razo occurred before Dakota Thompson put a hurt on the
blue QB. Dustin Scott, Sean McGowan, Marcus Green and Dillon May
got in a few pops and Aaron Burgh recovered a fumble. Panther players of
distinction know only by their numbers include #70 and #64 who
sealed off the right side for a great run by Ethan Burgh. Other Panthers
of distinction who shall remain anonymous until the updated roster include great
defense by #7, #9, #21, #46, #49, #56, #63.
