JV Gold Prevails over Cy Creek, 12-7
By Don Porter
The
defense played takeaway, the special teams played hide & seek and the offense
played the Hokey Pokey to give the JV Gold a solid win over the Cy Creek
Cougars.
It was
90 degrees on the field and 900 degrees in the stands when the Cougars in blue
jerseys and legible numbers kicked off to the Panthers in the road whites with
illegible numbers. The Panther captains for the game were Jason Williams
and Ryan Emerson. The JV Gold apparently doesn’t like the football early
in a game and for the second week in a row, promptly fumbled the ball. The
Cougars took advantage of their good fortune and scored 4 plays later to go up 0
- 7. The offense settled down and grinded out a 12 play, 85 yard drive behind
the O-line of Tanner Grebe, Jeffrey Dalton, James “Too Tall”
Fuentez, Eric Sanchez
and Plinio Reyes. Holes were opened up on both sides of center Too
Tall, going up against a blue house that he demolished through the
afternoon, Cougar #75 was very large. Captain Jason scurried for
nice yardage and QB Alex Sisson ran the option to the outside with
impunity. Dustin Scott delivered a downfield block for a 15 yard
Sisson run before Alex airmailed a delivery to Nicholas Bradley
who loped into the end zone, 6 – 7. Marcel Guillory, Matt Garland,
Bryce Vaughan and Marcus Green hustled for the kick-off team and
Keith Williams blasted the return man to hide the Cougars inside their 20.
The D-line of Samuel Porter, Brandon Vong and Dakota Thompson
lived up to last week’s reputation of shutting down the run. A long pass gave
the Cougars hope before Travis Arthur began the takeaway game by
recovering the first of many Cougar fumbles to end the quarter.
The
second quarter opened with Khaleeq Little, #3, channeling memories of
Oak’s best ever #3, now University of Texas wide receiver DeSean Hales, by
running a nifty 34 yard sweep. Sisson launched the end zone fade route
and Travis Arthur got the catch, 12 – 7. Keith Williams played
seek and destroy with the kick-off returner. The Oak defense absolutely stuffed
the Cougars for a “3 and out”, tackles by Dakota Thompson,
Samuel Porter, Sean McGowan and Captain Emerson. The punt was
short and Oak had great field position. An errant pass, a sack and a few busted
plays, the Panthers wasted the short field. The Cougars opened with a play that
looked like intentional grounding to everyone but the guys in stripes and only
their opinion matters. Trevor Dickerson got a tackle for loss before the
Cougars launched a long pass with a tremendous catch off the back of the Oak
defender. On a second and short, an Oak defender punched the ball into the air
and Samuel Porter snatched the ball from the front of his face mask. The
Cougars showed some home field pride by playing some very stout defense and
Nicholas Bradley got to perform his first career punt, kicking long and high
to the delight of his nervous Momma, never a doubt to his Daddy. Jonathan
Mair, Zaim Mohd-Zamri and Trevor Dickerson blasted the Cougars
to end their hopes for scoring before half.
Half
time was spent enjoying the northerly breeze which dropped the temperature to 89
on the field and 890 in the aluminum bleachers.
In
the second half, the offense chose to play the Hokey Pokey on several drives
(“you do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around”). Most fortunately, the
defense continued with their own game of takeaway. The Cougars opened with a
nice kick-off return, tackle by Darius Butler and Marcel Guillory.
After a few vicious Brandon Vong hits, Samuel Porter got his
second fumble recovery of the hot afternoon. The offense drew a penalty, called
a time-out, fumbled afterwards and we’re all pretty sure that wasn’t the play
called by the Coaches. Drew Latham and Tanner Grebe shut down a
Cougar run before Ethan Burgh absolutely blasted a sweep from his corner
position. The Cougars executed the nice quick-kick deep into Oak territory.
Again, Khaleeq ran a great outside sprint with lead blocking by Travis
Arthur. Oak went into a power formation, stacking backs behind the
guard/tackle hole and powering up the middle. Yardage was gained and time run
off the clock in methodical fashion all the way to the Cougar 15 yard line.
Alas, the Hokey Pokey music started playing and the ball went over on downs.
Erin Burgh and Travis Arthur shut-down the swing pass when the
Cougar coaches called the screen pass for long yardage. Keith Williams
ended the quarter with a tackle on the run play.

First
play of the fourth quarter was a great display of defensive teamwork, Samuel
Porter hitting the QB on his throw and Dillon May snagging the
interception. Oak pushed the ball across mid-field when the music started and
the fumble went to Creek. No matter, a few plays into the Cougar push,
Travis Arthur separated the ball from the ball carrier to earn the “slobber-knocker”
award for best hit. Oak offense heard the music and the Cougars had a “3 and
out”, fortunately Nicholas Bradley hit the punt and the punt returner,
each very hard, to hide the Cougars deep in their territory. Two plays later,
Dillon had his second interception of the half. The music played again
and Oak turned the ball back over to Creek. Will Hoffmans put a stop to
any hope the Cougars had with his interception to run out the game.
