JV Black Winning Streak Comes to an End... Lose to Spring, 20 - 29

By Steve Johnson

Spring kicked off out of bounds and the Panthers started off at the 30-yard line.  The first play was a pass from #10 Kenny Stover to #7 Cory Abron for a gain of 11 yards and a 1st down.  Stover passed again to Abron for 5 yards.  Then on 3rd down Stover threw to #8 Michael Starr who advanced the ball out to the Spring 48 collecting another 1st down.  Continuing the hot hand, Stover threw to #81 Tom Call for 20 yards.  After a 3-yard gain by #21 Le’Mon Ford, Stover threw to #14 Charles Musselwhite.  After the catch, Musselwhite ran to the 1-yard line before getting tackled.  The Panthers needed all 4 downs to get the ball into the endzone.  #21 Ford got the honor.  A 2pt conversion failed.  Score 6-0.

Spring returned the kickoff to the 44-yard line.  The Lions made a 1st down, then scored on a 33 yard pass and run to the endzone.  The PAT was good making the score Spring 7 Klein Oak 6.

#84 Greg Toth returned the kick off 12 yards to the KO 40.  On 1st down Stover dropped back to pass and found #8 Starr wide open and hit him in stride on the 30-yard line.  Starr “hit the afterburners” and blazed his way to the endzone for a 60-yard touchdown.  Stover passed to Musselwhite for the 2 pt conversion making the score 14-7.

On the kickoff #20 Ed Germany kicked the ball over the Spring returnman.  After picking up the ball, the runner found #2 Carl Smith all in his business at the 21-yard line.  It was an excellent tackle.  Spring moved the ball out to the 50-yard line.  On 1st down, #92 Tyler Spearman sacked the quarterback for a 7-yard loss.  The 1st quarter ended with Spring in possession at the 47, 3rd down 13 to go.  #20 Germany broke up the pass play on 3rd down and Spring was forced to punt.  The KO retrunman fumbled the punt and a Spring player picked it up and started running.  (It’s amazing how sometimes players make great plays in pairs.)  This time it was Germany’s turn.  Somehow he reached in and stole the ball for the Panthers.  After moving the ball out to the 40, the Panthers were forced to punt.  The snap was over the punters head and Spring ended up with the ball at the 29-yard line.  The Lions scored soon after that making the score KO 14 Spring 13.

The Spring kickoff was a touchback.  KO started on the 20yard line.  Not making a 1st down caused the Panthers to punt on 4th down.  The Lions got the ball on the 47.  A holding penalty on 1st down moved the ball back 10 yards.  #32 Jim Mills knocked down a pass making it 2nd and long.  On 3rd down #92 Spearman knocked down a pass in the backfield.  Spring punted on 4th down.  The ball was downed at the KO 12.  After no gain on 1st down, #7 Abron ran for 7 yards.  On 3rd down #8 Starr broke off a nice 50 yard run. 15 yards were tacked on due to a personal foul against Spring.  The ball was now on the Spring 16.  But 3 incomplete passes left the Panthers with a decision to make.  They called time out to discuss it.  The Panthers attempted a field goal.  The snap was high and the kick went wide left.  Spring took over at the 20.

Spring used a couple long plays to move the ball deep into the KO end as time was running out in the 1st half.  The Lions kicked a field goal as time expired to take 16-14 lead into half time.

Klein Oak kicked off to begin the 2nd half.  The kick was returned to the 35.  The Lions quickly moved the ball to the KO 12.  #77 Kyle Bottoms and #3 Kerry Harris sacked the QB for a 10-yard loss.  On 4th down Spring scored on a long pass into the endzone.  Score Spring 22 KO 14.

Starr returned the kick off to the 44-yard line.  After Ford gained a 1st down, Stover threw to Starr for and apparent long touchdown.  However a penalty against the Panthers called it back.  #21 Ford gained another 20 yards before the Panthers had to punt again.  Spring got the ball on their 43.  #68 Cody Dice sacked the QB for a 5-yard loss.  On 3rd down and long, Spring converted a long pass for a 1st down to the KO 37.  The 3rd quarter ended with  Spring on the 31.

The Panther were able to stop the Lions at the 26-yard line and took over there.  The Panthers moved the ball out to the 48 but had to punt from there.  The punt was returned to the Spring 41.  Spring moved the ball deep into Panther territory then scored with 1:17 left in the game.  That made the score Spring 29 KO 14.

Spring kicked off out of bounds.  The Panthers got the ball on the 30.  Stover passed to Musselwhite for 8 yards then to #15 Andre Pitts for a 1st down.  Stover then threw to Abron advancing the ball to the Lion 23.  The next ball went to Pitts at the 14.  On 3rd down Stover passed to Pitts in the endzone for the TD.  2 pt conv. Failed.  Score KO 20 Spring 29.

KO tried the onsides kick.  It was covered by the Lions and they ran out the final 30 seconds of the game.  The Panthers played hard.  Maybe should have won the game.  But some mistakes cost them in the end.  The final score was Spring 29 Klein Oak 20.

We saw a couple solo tackles #3 Kerry Harris, #20 Ed Germany, and #38 Tyler Jones got them.
