Klein Oak JV Black Wins Exciting Season Opener Against Cypress Ranch

 By Steve Johnson

As things would go, the first game of the year started late.  It was a warm evening with a cool breeze.  Nobody seemed to mind, as we watched the Klein Oak JV gold team finished off an impressive 27-6 win over the home team Cypress Ranch Mustangs.

Klein Oak kicked off deep and out of the end zone for a touchback.  From the 20yard line, Cy-Ranch ran 3 plays gained 1 yard and were forced to punt.  The center snapped the ball over the head of the punter and the ball traveled out of the end zone for a 2-point safety.

#8, Michael Starr received the following free kick and returned it about 15 yards giving the Panthers the ball at the Mustang 49-yard line.  After an off sides penalty against Cy-Ranch,  #10, Kenny Stover, connected with #14, Charles Musselwhite, for a 1st down at the 35 yard line.  4 out of the next 5 plays were Stover passes to #11, Alfred Baratti, the last being a 7-yard touchdown. KO added a 2 pt conversion for a 10-0 lead just 2:30 seconds into the game.  In that series, it looked like the Panther coaching staff found a weakness in front of the Mustang left cornerback and exploited it to the fullest and made them pay.

On Cy-Ranch’s next possession, they gained a few yards and were forced to punt again.

From the KO 25-yard line, #21, Le’mon Ford, had a 7-yard run.  Next play, Stover found #8, Starr, in front of the left cornerback for a long gain to the Mustang 21.  A Stover pass to #81, Tom Call, gave the Panthers the ball at the Cy-Ranch 8.  After a couple KO penalties a 4 down pass from Stover to Starr fell incomplete in the end zone and the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.

Again the Panther defense proved to be up to the task and the Mustangs were forced to punt.  #7, Corey Abron, returned the ball about 15 yards to the Cy-Ranch 42.  On this possession KO failed to make a first down in 4 plays and turned over the ball on downs.  From their own 40 Cy-Ranch put together their only drive of the game but fell prey to the Panther defense again ending up short of the goal and the Panthers took over the ball deep in their own territory at the 5-yard line.

On 1st down, Starr took a direct snap, cut left behind a “pancake” block by #65, Isaac Johnson, saw nothing but green grass and turned on the “jets” and took the ball 95 yards to “pay dirt”!  #20, Ed Germany, added the PAT for a 17-0 Panther lead with 4 minutes to play in the 1st half.  Nothing much happened during the rest of the half and the Panthers took that lead into the locker room.

#7, Abron, took the second half kickoff 23 yards to the KO 40 yard line.  On the first play Starr sprinted 60 yards for a second touchdown.  Germany added the PAT for a 24-0 lead.  After the kickoff Cy-Ranch ran 4 plays and turned over the ball on downs again.

From mid-field, the Panthers turned to a smash-mouth style of run game featuring several runs by #3 Kerry Harris.  Passes #81 Musselwhite and #84, Greg Toth, were mixed in, with the touchdown scored by #21, Le’mon Ford.  The PAT was added and the score read 31-0.  The 3rd quarter ended with the Mustangs threatening to score.

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter Cy-Ranch punched the ball into the end zone from 1 yard out and added a PAT for a score of 31-7.  From that point, it looked like most every player got in a couple of plays during the 4th quarter.  There was no scoring and the game ended with a final score of 31-7.

For the record, the defense played a fine game.  Some players with solo tackles that we were able to identify were #5 Jeremias Andrade, #20 Ed Germany, #22, Blane Robertson, and #35, Jim Mills.    Some of those plays were difficult to see due to the seating arrangements in the stands.  Next game hopefully we will be able to identify more.
