Klein Oak vs. Cy Creek
JV Black
September 4, 2008
Klein Oak JV Black Hang On to Beat Cy Creek 35 - 26
By Steve Johnson
Game 2 found us at Cy-Creek on a
beautiful sunny afternoon/evening. Unfortunately, we had to look directly into
the setting sun for all of the first quarter.
Cy-Creek kicked to #7 Cory Abron
who returned to the 25yard line. A face-masking penalty moved the ball out to
the 40. The first play was a 25 yard pass from #10 Kenny Stover to #8 Michael
Starr for a first down. 2 plays later on second down, Stover was sacked for a
loss. After an off sides penalty against Cy-Creek, Stover hit Starr for a 30
yard touchdown. The 2pt conversion was another Stover to Starr pass play. That
made the score KO 8-CC 0.
The kick off put the Cougars deep
in their own end of the field. After 3 plays they were forced to punt. The
snap from center went over the punters head and out of the endzone for a safety
and a 10 nothing lead for the Panthers. Cy Creek had to free kick to the
Panthers. #3 Kerry Harris returned to the Cougar 45. 6 consecutive run plays
by #7 Abron resulted in another touchdown. The 2pt conversion failed leaving
the score 16-0.
Cy-Creek fumbled the kickoff out
of bounds at the 14-yard line. On second down, #44 Collin Russell sacked the QB
at the 5-yard line. On 4th down Cy-Creek punted. Abron returned to
the 27. KO committed a couple of holding penalties; Stover tossed a pass to #14
Charles Musselwhite, but the Panthers failed to earn a first down. Cy-Creek
took over at their 42 but then fumbled on 1st down. #97 Anthony
Geren recovered the ball for the Panthers. The 1st quarter ended
with the Panthers possessing the ball at the Cy-Creek 25 yard line. Beginning
the 2nd quarter Stover threw to Musselwhite for a 1st down
at the 15. #21 Le’mon Ford took a handoff from Stover and sprinted around the
left end and into the end zone for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked and the
score read KO 22 CC 0.
Cy-Creek returned the kick off to
the CC 40. On the second play, the Cougars fumbled and #4 Michael Claus snagged
the ball out of mid air broke out of the pile of linemen and raced 45 yards to
the end zone for a score. The PAT failed. KO 28- CC 0.
On
the kick off #2 Karl Smith made a fine open field tackle at the CC 35. The
Cougars weren’t able to advance the ball much and had to punt. On 2nd
down Stover connected on a 33-yard pass to #11 Alfred Baratti. A couple plays
later, after a 10yard run, Abron lost the handle of the ball but # 74 Corey
Cooke was able to scoop it up for the “good guys”. Starr later scored on a run
behind a nice block by#77 Kyle Bottoms. #20 Ed Germany added the PAT which made
the score 35-0.
#38 Tyler Jones made a one-handed
tackle on the kickoff at the Cy-Creek 25. The Panther defense was strong and
forced the Cougars to punt. The Panthers let the ball roll dead at the KO 25
and started there. From the KO 36 # 3 Harris ripped off a 50 yard run to the CC
16. At this point it really looked like the rout was on, and the Cy-Creek
Cougars didn’t like it much. Some personal fouls were exchanged a couple of
Creek players were ejected and the Panthers failed to score before the half ran
out.
Klein Oak kicked off to begin the
2nd half. #77 Bottoms just “planted” the returnman for the Cougars
at the CC 30. Cy-Creek quickly moved the ball all the way down field to the KO
5yard line. Then fumbled. #32 for the Panthers recovered. (His name was not
on the roster) The Panthers moved the ball to the 28 and fumbled. Creek
recovered. 3 plays later they scored. The PAT failed. Score KO 35 CC 6.
The Cy-Creek kickoff rolled into
the end zone and was unwisely brought out to the 5yard line. On 1st
down Stover fired a 32-yard strike to Musselwhite. 4 plays later the Panthers
were forced to punt. CC took over at their 47. From there they put together a
drive and scored with 1:38 left in the 3rd quarter. The PAT again
failed leaving the score 35-12.
The Panthers moved the ball some
on their next possession. However, they had to punt and the Cougars took over
at midfield. The Cougars quickly scored again making the score 35-20 with a
good deal of time left on the clock. After the kickoff, Stover hit Baratti on
the sideline and Alfred sprinted 35 yards to the CC 30.
The
Panthers ran 4 plays and were forced to give up the ball on downs.
This game was definitely a story
of 2 different halves. KO ruled the 1st and CC ruled the 2nd.
The Cougars scored quickly again making the score 35-26 before the PAT. The
Cougars were in a must score situation needing a 1 or 2 pt conversion to put
them within striking distance of the leading Klein Oak Panthers with only 1
minute to play. The Panther defense squashed the PAT and sealed the victory.
Score KO 35- CC 26.
For the Oak defense, here are some
players who we saw make solo tackles: #40 George Nassif, #22 Blaine Robertson,
#38 Tyler Jones, #44 Collin Russell, and #45 Andrew Reisdorf.
