Klein Oak Freshmen Gold’s defense comes up big in win over Klein

By Russ Goodall

If ever a team needed its defense to make big plays when big plays were a must, it was the Klein Oak Freshman Gold against Klein on Thursday at Klein High School.

The Panthers allowed Klein just 130 total yards, including 49 yards rushing on 35 carries, and used three fumble recoveries to turn back the Bearkats 14-9 and stay unbeaten on the season at 4-0.

The Panthers defense – led by Dominique Levarity, Joseph Alvarez, Luis Avelino, Adam Walker, Carson Cleveland, Christopher Sanders, Tony Williams and Ernest Davis – stopped the Bearkats deep in Klein Oak Gold territory three times – including once after a blocked punt and another when the Panthers could not get off the punt – to preserve the win.

While the defense was doing its job, the Klein Oak Gold offense – led up front by Seth Borderion, Derrick Downing, Samuel Vela, Branden Bielefeldt and Thomas Seltz – did just enough to score twice.

Trailing 9-0 late in the second quarter, the Panthers offense came to life behind the running of Blake Ashford.

Ashford chewed up the Klein defense for 43 yards on six carries, while quarterback Conner McQueen hit Lance Fegan for 19 yards, then Matthew McBride for 20 yards before hitting Justin White for the 8-yard touchdown.
