Freshmen Gold Dominate Cy Creek from start to finish

The Klein Oak Freshman Gold Panthers used big plays and a smothering defense to smash Cy Creek 34-6 on Thursday afternoon at Klein Oak High School.

The Panthers (2-0) got touchdown runs of 20 and 53 yards, to go with scoring tosses of 46 and 22 yards en route to a dominating performance. Klein Oak Gold used a balanced attack to take care of Cy Creek.

The Panthers, behind the solid blocking up front from Braden Bielefeldt, Luke Emerson, Adam Walker, Thomas Seltz and Seth Borderion, rolled up 248 yards of total offense, with 126 of those yards coming on the ground.

Blake Ashford and Rock Stevens led the way on the ground for Klein Oak Gold. Ashford carried the ball 11 times for 91 yards, while Stevens rushed the ball four times for 24 yards. Both running backs accounted for a touchdown.

When the Cougars loaded up the defense to stop Ashford and Stevens, quarterback Conner McQueen made them pay with his arm.  McQueen completed five of six passes for 102 yards, including two touchdown tosses to Blake Scott.

While the offense was gouging Cy Creek with big plays, the Panthers’ defense was shutting down the Cougars’ offense.

The Klein Oak Gold defense, led by the play of Kurt Berks, Kemon Wright, Adam List, Luis Avelino, Carson Cleveland, Adam Walker and Saul Sanchez, held the Cougars to just 63 total yards. The Panthers also recovered two fumbles and had one interception in the dominating win.

After both teams went 3-and-out to start the game, the Klein Oak Gold offense got it cranked up on its second drive of the game.

The Panthers marched 77 yards on 10 plays, with the final 20 yards coming on a nifty run up the gut of the defense for Stevens. Eduardo Plascencia was true on the kick and Klein Oak Gold led 7-0 with less than a minute to go in the first quarter.

The ensuing kickoff was a bit of a miss hit, but that was perfect for the Panthers. The kick traveled just over 10 yards and Klein Oak Gold pounced on the free football to put their offense back in business at the Cougars 46.

The Panthers would need just one play to make Cy Creek pay for the miscue.

On first down, McQueen took the snap and rolled out to his right where he found an open Scott behind the defense. Scott hauled in the pass and outran the Cougars’ defense to the end zone for the TD. Plascencia was again good on the kick and Klein Oak Gold was on top 14-0 with 42 seconds to play in the first quarter.

After the teams traded punts, the Panthers’ defense came up big.

On third and 11 deep in Cougar territory, Klein Oak Gold linebacker Avelino knocked the ball loose and Carson Cleveland pounced on the fumbled to put the Panthers’ offense back in business at the Cy Creek 27.

After a 5-yard run by Ashford, McQueen hit a crossing Scott at the Cy Creek 5 and the big wide out did the rest himself, getting the Panthers into the end zone for the third time in the first half.

The kick would be blocked, but with just seven seconds to go in the first half the Panthers would hold a 20-0 lead.

The teams would trade touchdowns and missed extra-points to start the second half, with the Panthers TD coming on a 53-yard weaving run through the Cougars’ defense by Ashford.

Up 26-6, the Panthers were not done.  On the very next drive for Cy Creek, the Panthers’ defense would come up big again.

On second down, Panthers defensive back Wright would come up with the defense’s second fumble recovery of the night.

The Klein Oak Gold offense would need just six plays to go the 39 yards for the score. This time it was Avelino taking the handoff and finding the end zone from 1-yard out. Quarterback Zachary Gebhart would then connect with Lance Fegan on the two-point try to finish of the scoring and Cy Creek.

The Klein Oak Freshman Gold team will put their unbeaten record on the line at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday, when the Panthers host Cy Woods at Klein Oak High School.
