Klein Oak vs. Cy Ranch
Freshman Black
August 28, 2008
Freshman Black lose a heart breaker in season
opener to Cy Ranch
By Tim Corcoran and Ernest Davis (Freshman Gold Parent)
Overall a well played game for 3
quarters but could not close the door down the stretch.
1st
Quarter
Dashone Smith got things going with a
60 yard TD run just two plays into the ball game. Extra point was good and Oak
led the contest 7 to 0. After the ensuing kick-off the Mustangs struck right
back. On their 1st offensive play, the Cy Ranch RB slipped around the
left side of the Panther defense for a 59 yard TD of his own. Cy Ranch missed
their point after and the Panthers held a slight lead of 7 – 6.

KO got the ball back and began after
a decent kick return of 5yards by Tuff McClain. On 1st down a nice
pitch and catch from QB Nick Baratti to wide out James Dorris got the Panthers
moving in the correct direction. This drive eventually fizzled and the Panthers
we’re forced to punt. Eddie Fatu absolutely blasted the Mustang punt returner
for no gain with a nice hit at the 40 yard line.
Cy Ranch did not fair any better on
their next possession as Jay Andrews and Shaul Daniel made tackles in the
mustang backfield that pushed them into a 4 and long which resulted in a CR
punt.
2nd
Quarter
Smith got going again with a nice 5
yard run on 4th down that gave the Panthers another set of downs to
work with as the game moved into the 2nd Qtr. Super blocking by John
Dice, Philip Castor, Chase Mauldin and Jeremy Jones opened up some big holes.
Another Smith burst up the middle gave Oak a 2nd and 5 situation.
Baratti then went to the air and completed a nice 25 pass reception to McClain
that moved the sticks again. However a Panther fumbled spoiled this nice Baratti-lead
drive. The Panther defense was stingy and gave up 4 yards in 3 plays with two
tackles by Palmer Currie and Jeff Toth.
After unsuccessful possession’s by
each squad that ended in punts the Mustangs got the better of the deal as they
blocked the Panther punt and looked in good position to take the lead. Things
turned in a hurry in a positive way for the Panthers as Hilliard stepped in
front of a Mustang pass and took it to the house for a KO defensive touchdown.
Extra point missed and Oak lengthened their lead to 13 to 6.
On the next Mustang drive the
Panther’s kept the big momentum rolling in the favor as #14 fell on a lose ball
for yet another KO turnover. Unfortunately the KO offensive could not get things
going and punted yet again. This time the Mustang’s would not falter as they hit
a 90 yard TD pass with just .45 seconds left in the first half. Point after was
good and the contest was all square at the half 13 – 13.
3rd
Quarter
Moving into the 3rd
quarter, both defenses came out to play as they forced punts or turnovers
throughout the entire quarter. Neither team scored in the quarter as Panther
defenders Fatu, Luis Urrea, Geo Reyes and Cougar Babin lead the Panthers.
4th
Quarter
With the score all knotted up at 13,
some one on either team needed to step up and make a play. The KO defense did
their part as they stopped the Mustangs on the 1st drive of the 4th
Qtr. With the ball back in the hands of the KO offense and 5:22 left in
the
game the Panthers put together a good drive with #20 doing the bulk of the work.
Hilliard gained close to 34 yards on the drive. However two bad snaps negated
all the work by Hilliard and the O-line and Oak was forced with a 4th
and 17. Oak went for it and came up just shy and turned the ball over to the
Mustangs.
With just 2:32 left in the contest a
Mustang receiver got lose in the defensive backfield and scored a 70 yard
heartbreaking touchdown that sealed the win for the visiting opponent.
A good effort by the Panthers that
came up just a bit shy. Come out and cheer on the Panthers as they get another
crack at victory with a 6:30pm game at Oak against Cy Creek on Sept 4th.
